Moving Day Checklist

• Transfer utilities to your name — Electric, gas, water/sewer, trash — scheduled for closing day so nothing lapses.
• Set up internet early — Install appointments book out. Schedule it the week you go under contract.
• Change the locks — You have no idea how many copies of the old keys exist. Rekeying is cheap peace of mind.
• USPS mail forwarding — Takes two minutes online; start it a week before the move.
• Update your address everywhere — Bank, employer, insurance, driver’s license, voter registration, subscriptions.
• File your homestead exemption — Louisiana’s homestead exemption reduces property tax on your primary residence — file with your parish assessor. Don’t skip this.
• Locate the shutoffs — Main water valve and breaker panel — find them BEFORE the first emergency.
• Replace HVAC filters & test smoke detectors — Five dollars of filter, day one. Fresh batteries in every detector.
• Confirm homeowners insurance is active — It was bound at closing — verify the policy and set up autopay if it’s not escrowed.
